Ubuntu is a free (as in freedom) operating system built on the Linux kernel. It is fully functional, super-fast, customizable, and it doesn't cost a penny. If you have been thinking of trying linux, or are fed up with how bloated the last two versions of Windows have been, then now is the time to try.
You can run it from the CD without installing. And if you want to install, you can do it from within windows. That's right, it will use the same file system that is already in place. So there is no longer any need to boot from a CD, partition your hard drive, or change boot loaders. And if you decide you don't like it (which probably won't happen) you can uninstall it from the windows add/remove programs dialog. Easy as Pie.
Then once you decide that you're totally hooked, you can go back and boot from the CD, and install it over top of your old windows installation. Kiss viruses and expensive desktop applications goodbye.
